Drivers of this month's change

It's the fourth month of the year, and for the fourth month in a row, the Hagerty Market Rating has seen a slight increase, rising 0.38 to 65.14.

Despite some increases in the auction activity section of the rating so far this year, it was down slightly for April thanks to a 6% drop in the number of cars sold at auction over the past 12 months. The private market had a better April, however, with the average sale price up 7.5% over the past 12 months.

For well over a year, the number of owners expressing the belief that their vehicles are increasing in value has been falling. While that trend continued unchanged for owners of high-end vehicles, for April the number of mainstream vehicle owners expressing that belief actually rose. This corresponds with general strength observed in the entry-level market.

Optimism among market observers led to a small but noticeable increase in the expert sentiment section of the rating for April, and there was a small drop in the correlated instruments section thanks to stock market volatility.
