Model overview

Model description

1986 marked the last year for the Ford Mustang SVO. An estimated 3,382 SVOs were produced in 1986, and horsepower fell from 205 to an even 200. You could only get the SVO with a 5-speed manual transmission.

With the introduction of the sequential multi-port fuel injection V-8, Ford did away with the carburetor on its 5.0. This engine now made 210 horsepower and 265 pound feet of torque. Some sources state output as low as 200 and as high as 225. Your results may vary, depending on the condition of the vehicle.

Power for the GT was routed through either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Traction-Lok helped put power to the road and minimize wheel hop when pulling away from the line.

Part of the 5.0 Mustang’s charm was the rumble of the exhaust. An H-pattern featured catalytic converters and a muffler on each side. The center-connecting pipe of the H-pattern helped scavenging, and the result was the sound Mustang fans love to this day.

The base 88-hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder soldiered on, meanwhile, as did the 3.8-liter V-6, which made 120 horsepower. The four-cylinder put power to the road through either a four-speed manual or three speed automatic transmission. That automatic was the only option for the V-6. Visually, you can tell ’86-and-newer Fox body Ford Mustangs from the ’85-and-older cars by the addition of the federally mandated center high brake lights.
