How it works alongside your government policy

Your provincial coverage stays exactly where it is.

1.

Keep your government policy

Your ICBC, MPI, or SGI coverage stays in place.

2.

Add a Hagerty collector policy

Quote in minutes without an appraisal,* and layer collector protection to cover the true value of your car.

3.

No surprise "market value" payout

Know what your car is worth at the time of a claim, plus specialized claims experts.

Why add Hagerty on top of your government policy?

A standard government policy treats your classic like a commuter. Here's what Hagerty adds for a collector vehicle.

Guaranteed Value

You tell us your car's value and we agree on it up front, in writing, without an appraisal.* Does your existing standard government policy provide this peace of mind?

Look up a value

Expert claims team

You'll work with adjusters that specialize in collector vehicles, not everyday commuters. You also get your choice of repair shop - which a standard government policy may not offer.

How claims work

Value that doesn't depreciate

Your agreed value stays put while your car appreciates. No annual depreciation working against a car that's going up in value.

Modified, Hot Rods, Resto-Mods and More Welcomed

Government collector programs often exclude modified cars, hot rods, and newer collectible vehicles. Hagerty covers many of the cars they turn away.

Modified coverage

Get the right parts

Our specialized claims team and in-house parts specialists are trained to track down collector car components for repairs.

Collector plate or standard plate

You don't need a government collector plate to add Hagerty. Whether your car wears a collector plate or a standard one, you qualify for Hagerty's core coverage.

Collector plate + Hagerty

Keep your collector plate and add full Guaranteed Value protection on top.

New for 2026: Pick “collector plate” when quoting to unlock a 10% BC rate reduction.

Standard plate + Hagerty

No collector plate? Collector car owners that choose a standard plate + a Hagerty policy get core coverages and more freedom to use their vehicle.

Insurance built by drivers, for drivers

A government policy keeps you legal on the road. Hagerty keeps the car you love protected the way it deserves - with Guaranteed Value, specialist claims handlers who understand collector vehicles, coverage that welcomes the builds and projects others turn away and optional coverages like Cherished Salvage®. Layer it on top of your provincial coverage and drive knowing your car is valued for what it truly is.

Common Questions

Yes. You keep your required mandatory government coverage. Hagerty is a separate, supplemental policy that covers Collision and Comprehensive damage, plus what a government policy doesn't: Guaranteed Value, optional Cherished Salvage®, and the right parts for repairs. It adds protection on top of your government coverage rather than replacing it.

No - a collector plate is not required. New for 2026: pick “collector plate” when quoting to unlock a 10% BC rate reduction on your Hagerty policy. Without one you still qualify for all of Hagerty's core coverage - you just won't receive the collector-plate rate reduction.

Hagerty covers many vehicles the government collector program turns away, including:

  • modified vehicles and resto-mods
  • hot rods
  • modern collectible vehicles
  • cars mid-restoration
  • cars with cosmetic imperfections
  • vehicles you drive for more than the occasional car show

NEVER STOP DRIVING. HAGERTY.CA

In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, basic vehicle coverage is provided by the provincial insurer (ICBC, MPI or SGI, respectively); Hagerty provides separate, supplemental collector-vehicle coverage and does not replace your government policy.

In the event of a covered total loss, your Guaranteed Value is paid less any deductible and salvage (if optional Cherished Salvage does not apply) and after any settlement with your government policy, and includes any applicable taxes unless prohibited by law.

The BC collector-plate rate reduction is effective May 27, 2026 for new policies and June 15, 2026 for renewals, subject to eligibility. Some coverage not available in all provinces.

*An appraisal is not required to obtain a quote; Hagerty may request an appraisal, photos or additional documentation for certain vehicles or values before coverage is bound. This is only a general description of coverage. All coverage is subject to policy provisions, exclusions and endorsements.
